Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine has enjoyed a continuous 5000-year history. It encompasses Acupuncture, Herbalism, Massage, Nutrition, Exercise and other adjunct therapies.  This tradition began to grow in the Western world in the early 1970’s.  It addresses the whole person, and is particularly suited to chronic and idiopathic conditions in addition to general wellness.

Acupuncture

The traditional Chinese explanation of Acupuncture is that channels of  energy (meridians) run in regular patterns throughout     the body. An obstruction in the flow of energy in the meridians can cause pain or disharmony. Inserting very fine, sterile needles or applying heat at precise Acupuncture points can influence the meridians.  Acupuncture needles unblock obstruction and re-establish regular energy (Qi) flow throughout the body, which can affect problems on the surface, in the extremities, and influence internal organ functions.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese form of therapeutic massage. During a session the receiver lies on a mat comfortably clothed. Treatment consists of stretches and pressure applied by the practitioner’s thumbs, palms, elbows and feet, as well as other techniques.  Like Acupuncture, Shiatsu works to unblock or enhance the Qi and balances energy throughout the body, regulating the internal organs.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs have been the most important tool for healing throughout most of human history. The Chinese developed an incredibly sophisticated pharmacopoeia, consisting of thousands of single agents as well as elegant, effective formulas. Formulas are customized to address each person’s needs, identified through codified diagnostic techniques. Herbal tradition in our culture has been suppressed, despite its richness. This situation is changing due to a popular movement. A trained Herbalist is aware of possible side effects as well as interactions with prescription drugs. Herbs can be administered in a number of forms, and course of treatment varies depending upon the condition.

Essential Oils constitute a branch of Herbalism.  A vast amount of plant material is used to yield a small bottle of oil, thus they are highly concentrated.  They are particularly suited to treating skin, respiratory, mental/emotional, and muscular problems.  Use of essential oils on specific acupuncture points is a new and powerful modality.
